Shhh!  You Can't Talk about That!
This blog will take a look at the following questions:

Why are "taboo" topics, particularly racial diversity, not openly discussed at school?
What are the pros and cons of this type of discussion?
What are different perspectives on this issue (e.g. teachers, students, families, etc.)?

  1. I'm looking forward to reading your blog! This topic really interests me. Earlier this week, I co-taught with Amy about Ruby Bridges. We discussed race and segregation. Her second graders were very comfortable discussing the topic. Amy has set a wonderful foundation for her students (showing her level of comfort with the topic). They knew about Malcolm X, Colin Powell, among other influential civil rights leaders. As I entered the classroom, I too was very comfortable discussing this topic as a result of the CUIN courses I have taken at Seattle University.

  2. I am also really looking forward to reading about your topic. It's such a vital and overlooked idea that teachers don't necessarily realize they reinforce! Children are influenced by our reactions, if we could take the almost nervous response out of these issues it would do so much for diversity and education. I like the layout so far!
